About the event
The Oxted Sessions are hugely excited to be welcoming American electro-pop pioneer Nite Jewel to the URC this June! Recording as Nite Jewel since 2008, Ramona Gonzalez has released five critically acclaimed albums (most recently the darkly beautiful 'No Sun' in 2021, written in the wake of the break-up of her marriage), and her music has been featured in film, TV & even on the video game Grand Theft Auto! She is coming to Europe this June for a short tour of just six shows, and finishes in Oxted, after visiting the likes of Lisbon, Berlin & London. The iconic Rolling Stone magazine says of her: "The artist lets her gauzy voice float out of long, atmospheric expanses, curling like smoke through delicately arranged synths and subtle bass lines. She offers careful moments of stillness, giving the listener room to sit with the music and find their own quiet catharsis through her songs." Gonzalez’s music transports you to a dreamy otherworld, with scuffed backdrops and oblique, guarded lyrics – Pitchfork (7.7) Though Gonzalez has always been a great arranger and producer, this album demonstrates how much she has improved as a lyricist – The Wire (8) She’s most compelling on “This Time,” whose haunted spaces are gradually filled with flickering keyboards and ebow guitar – Uncut (8) Opening the evening will be a DJ set from the local legend that is Seb Emmins! Seb will be playing an ambient, downtempo electronica set with Afro and middle-eastern influences from the likes of Black Coffee, and Bhudda Bar-pioneer, Ravine.
