Music ‘could face extinction’ in secondary schools

Music "could face extinction" as a subject in secondary schools in England, researchers have warned. They say music is being squeezed because of pressure on pupils to take subjects included in the EBacc school league table measure. Almost two thirds of 650 state school teachers, surveyed by Sussex University researchers, said the EBacc meant fewer students were [...]

Exercise is so important not only for physical well being but also mental health, so many benefits from just popping on your trainers and moving more. At Paracise we have fun, Sarah has created an effective exercise programme with no floor work, that is gentle but effective and if you come along for the first time it’s is completely free - there is nothing to lose, come along and see what this exercise class has to offer 💙

The Clockwork Trust
Winter 2019 Update

From all involved at Clockwork, we wish everyone a Happy and Positive 2019.

We had hoped that, by now, our Charity Commission Registration would be complete so that we could start to deliver on our mission to help young people. The application process continues; the Commission’s registration process is, quite rightly, rigorous but we are confident that we have answered its numerous questions to the best of our ability and are hopeful that our official registration will be approved soon.

In the meantime, with the specific permission of some of our donors, we have been able to make some progress in the last six months.

Over the summer, we funded additional counselling for young people with Relate through Oxted School, offering urgent support when CAHMs could not. We have been providing one day’s counselling a week, starting last summer term, which has proven to be very successful and worthwhile. Charlie O’Sullivan of Oxted School said: “The additional day of counselling has seen us with a shorter waiting list and allows more students to be seen and supported by an invaluable service. The counsellor working with us on this day has settled in well to the team at Oxted and we are thankful for this opportunity as it allows us to grow our provision, ensuring our students receive the best possible support.”

Clockwork has operated a Parents’ Support Circle, which takes place once a month, and we open up a safe space for parents to confidentially voice any worries they have with regard to their children. The venue is very kindly being offered by Andrew at Robertsons Coffee Shop in Oxted, and dates are confirmed monthly on our Facebook page.

We are very sorry to have lost our wonderful Trustee, Revd Dr Andrew Rumsey. Andrew has been the Rector of the Oxted Team Ministry since 2014 and has been a strong supporter and Trustee of Clockwork since its inception. He has recently been appointed as Bishop of Ramsbury in the Diocese of Salisbury and has moved to Salisbury with his family this month to take up his new post. We wish Andrew and his family all the very best in their new situation. We are very pleased that he has graciously agreed to be the Patron of The Clockwork Trust so, although he will no longer be involved in the day to day work of Clockwork, we will still have the benefit of his experience and support as Patron.

We are pleased to announce that Andrew’s place as Trustee has been taken by Robin Sundt FCA, who will also act as Treasurer for Clockwork. Robin is now retired but spent his career in international marketing and management and brings a wealth of experience to Clockwork.

The building plans for Clockwork’s space behind Idol Hands’ facility have been drawn up and are currently being submitted to the local Council for approval. Builders are also lined up so, once we have approval, we will be able to move quickly to get the space operational.

We are still immensely grateful for all the donations we have received. Thank you to the staff at Jackson Stops and Staffs, George Trapp, The Wives Fellowship of Oxted and Limpsfield, Holland Sports Club with HSFest2018, Pete Green running the marathon on our behalf and KenFest, to name but a few.

We are looking forward to being able to achieve much more in 2019 once our charitable registration is finalised.

We are always happy to receive emails if you have any questions or comments. Please email: enquiries@clockwork.org.uk

Clockwork

Clockwork was recently invited to St Mary’s Junior School to hear about their newly introduced MindUP™ programme to the curriculum.

We spoke with Steve Wanstall, a teacher who recognised that anxiety and stress appeared to be increasing within the school amongst the teachers, parents and the pupils, and felt that something needed to be implemented to make improvements for everyone.

Last year St Mary’s decided to implement a whole school programme MindUP™, a rigorously researched and evidenced framework to support wellbeing and pupil achievement across the school. All members of staff received training from a certified MindUP™ consultant and have continued support from the MindUP™ team as part of their three term model of training to ensure successful implementation. Since doing so, they have noted a marked improvement in the children’s behaviour and class/playground atmosphere.

MindUP™ helps the students improve their SEL Skills (social and Emotional Learning); improve their pro-social behaviours and their academic outcomes. It also promotes a positive classroom environment where the children are more focused, tolerant, caring and compassionate with their teachers and peers.

The school concentrates on using a Core Breathing Practice, The Brain Break which takes place three times a day, after first break, lunchtime and second break. We were invited to observe a ‘brain break’, in the classroom. The teacher asked the children to stop what they were doing, to settle into chairs and to sit quietly. A pupil was seated at the front of the class and she read from a short script whist she lead the breathing practice. To help focus the children’s attention a single bar chime was used at the beginning and end of the practice. The atmosphere changed remarkably, from a noisy, busy classroom, to an extremely calm and serene environment. The majority of the children seemed to really engage with the practice.

The children have also been creating beautiful displays for the school hallways and classrooms. Examples show a cross section of the brain and pictures pointing out 3 areas linked with emotions, memory and learning. Mood boards also have photos from home that are connected with happy memories, and a mindful behaviour board for when children have done something mindful i.e. tidied up without being prompted, helped a fellow student with something, or being mindful of friends feeling etc.

The teachers have been educating the children about the physical aspects of emotions and the neurobiology of the brain and the nervous system, using some brilliant analogies and graphics. Examples include pictures of hippos when talking or learning about the physiology of the Hippocampus. This is the brain’s medical temporal lobe that forms an important part of the limbic system, the region that regulates the emotions.

Within the school there is a ‘time out’ space used during lunch times. Since introducing the MindUP™ programme to the curriculum, there has been a considerable decline in the number of pupils accessing the room.

We were really impressed with the MindUP™ teaching framework and it’s practices that St Mary’s have introduced, and at Clockwork we believe that mental health wellbeing and care needs to be introduced at a very young age to help build better tools for dealing with emotions and difficult or challenging situations.
